Spartan Aviation Scholarship Propels
Future Aviation Professionals
The Broomfield Community Foundation is proud to announce the 2025 Spartan Aviation Scholarship recipients. This year, 51 applicants competed for funding, with 24 winners awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500.
Open to students of all ages, the scholarship drew strong interest from Metropolitan State University of Denver, MacAir Aviation, and Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology campuses in Tulsa, OK; Broomfield, CO; and Riverside, CA. Awardees represent a diverse range of future aviation professionals, including Aviation Electronics Technicians, Aircraft Maintenance Technicians, Flight Students, and Pilots.
Why does this matter? The U.S. aviation industry faces an unprecedented shortage of skilled professionals. Boeing’s 2023 outlook projected a global need for 610,000 new pilots and 690,000 new maintenance technicians over the next two decades. Without continued investment in training, America’s ability to provide safe, reliable, and accessible air travel could be at risk.
The Spartan Aviation Scholarship not only lightens the financial burden for students but also helps ensure that air travel remains one of the safest and most dependable forms of transportation for generations to come.
Aviation is critical to America’s economy and everyday life. By supporting students at every stage of their journey, this scholarship invests in the future of safe and innovative air travel.

Human Services Grantee A Precious Child
Meets Basic Needs and Much More
In 2008, A Precious Child began in a garage with a simple mission: to provide children in need with essential resources and opportunities to reach their full potential. In their first year, they served just over 50 children. From that small but mighty start, A Precious Child has grown into a leading nonprofit headquartered right here in Broomfield—one that now serves eight counties and partners with more than 300 agencies.
BCF is proud to support A Precious Child through our Human Services grant cycle, a partnership with the City and County of Broomfield’s Department of Human Services. Our most recent grant helps fund A Precious Child’s Resource Bridge, a program that provides critical essentials while also connecting families with long-term pathways toward stability.
The Resource Bridge has three components:
- Resource Center – A holistic hub where families access essential support and resources to work toward self-sufficiency.
- Community Distributions – Large-scale events held in trusted local neighborhoods that remove transportation barriers and deliver essentials directly to families.
- Satellite Resource Centers – Eighteen on-site “closets” located in schools, shelters, hospitals, and other partner facilities, including Broomfield’s Emerald Elementary School and the Department of Human Services office.

Building Brighter Summers—
And Brighter Futures
X
From June 2 to June 26, Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) hosted its third annual Summer Summit, a four-week, full-day academic program designed to bridge learning gaps and provide school readiness for students from rising kindergarten through eighth grade. With transportation, breakfast, and lunch included, the program ensured accessibility for families across the district.
Through the Broomfield Community Foundation Human Services grant cycle we financially supported a portion of Impact on Education's fully fundedRising K Summer Summit, a unique school readiness program for incoming kindergarteners. Held at Birch Elementary, the program welcomed 200 soon-to-be kindergarteners, including bright-eyed students from Aspen Creek, Birch, Emerald, and Kohl elementary schools. These young learners gathered on classroom rugs, listened to stories like “The Three Little Pigs,” created music, and built marshmallow houses—learning not just shapes and numbers, but resilience, teamwork, and the power of asking for help.
“If I’m stuck and really frustrated, what do I do?” asked kindergarten teacher Becky Spear. “I stop, take a deep breath, and say, ‘I need help.’”
Why Rising K Matters
Early childhood education has a proven track record of improving long-term outcomes. Through programs like Rising K, students—many of whom have not had access to preschool—experience what a full day of kindergarten feels like. For families facing barriers to early learning, this program creates a critical on-ramp to academic success.

Avery Becklenberg: Leading the Next
Generation of Philanthropy
The Broomfield Community Foundation is thrilled to welcome back a familiar face—Avery Becklenberg. Previously serving as our Community Outreach Manager, Avery has returned in a volunteer capacity to lead the Youth Advisory Council (YAC).
Avery was instrumental in re-infusing the YAC in 2021-2022, and under her guidance, the program has grown into one of BCF’s premier hands-on learning experiences. The YAC equips local high school students with knowledge and skills in philanthropy, fundraising, and grantmaking, preparing the next generation to carry forward a spirit of community giving.
A 2021 graduate of the University of Denver with dual degrees in Global and Public Affairs and in Humanities and Social Sciences, Avery brings both academic excellence and an authentic connection with young people. Her mentorship helps YAC members not only learn about philanthropy but also experience the joy of giving back in ways that directly impact Broomfield.
This month, the YAC will select its focus area for the 2025–2026 program. Last year, the group granted $2,000 to three mental health organizations serving Broomfield youth—proof that their decisions make a real and lasting difference.
Fundraising is already off to a strong start: thanks to the generosity of neighbors at Broomfield Days, the YAC raised $587—double last year’s total. Every dollar raised will directly support a local nonprofit, enabling young leaders to see firsthand how their efforts create a lasting community impact.
For the second year, the YAC is also partnering with the Baseline Community neighborhood, building intergenerational connections and fostering a culture of mutual support across all ages.
We are grateful for Avery’s leadership and the energy of these young changemakers. Together, they are helping to shape a brighter future for Broomfield. Because of leaders like Avery, engaged youth, and the generosity of our neighbors, we’re reminded that a truly thriving community is built on the commitment of giving residents and socially responsible businesses working together for the common good.
Spotlight on First Interstate Bank:
A Business Impact Partner and thoughtful Employer
Recently, Broomfield Community Foundation was honored to receive a generous $5,000 gift from First Interstate Bank, presented by Lisa Gouran, VP and Retail Hub Manager. This gift enhances our grantmaking capabilities, enabling us to support the nonprofits that provide vital services to our neighbors in need.
First Interstate Bank’s impact extends far beyond its financial contributions. The company encourages its staff to be active volunteers in their communities—offering paid time for service and providing a charitable matching gift program. Locally, their team recently volunteered at Broomfield FISH, putting their values into action.
We are especially grateful for Lisa’s years of leadership on the BCF Board of Directors, where her expertise and passion for community have helped guide the Foundation forward.
It’s worth noting that when employees don’t take advantage of matching gift programs, valuable dollars are left on the table—funds that nonprofits urgently need, especially now as traditional grant funding has significantly declined. By utilizing these programs, employees can effectively double their impact and support more neighbors.
